A path to net zero carbon fire and rescue services.
Our fifth project with Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service (MFRS) — the new Fire and Rescue Station, Training Academy, and National Resilience Centre of Excellence — is being constructed in the heart of Aintree.
Responding to the Government’s 2050 net zero carbon target was a key requirement for MFRS. Our early involvement at RIBA Stage 2 allowed us to carry out detailed optioneering and work with the Service to develop a ‘Pathway to Net Zero Carbon’, ensuring the facilities are on track to achieve zero operational carbon by 2040.
We analysed energy data from three comparable fire stations we have delivered for MFRS over the past five years to establish performance benchmarks. The designs for the new facilities are 55% better than BSRIA CO₂/m² benchmarks, achieved through measures including an enhanced building envelope, VRF heating and cooling for primary rooms, panel heaters for ancillary rooms, gas radiant panels for appliance bays, heat recovery ventilation, and gas-fired hot water systems.
