Any project to upgrade, repair, or modify buildings in educational settings is an opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of young people — and this is the value we bring to all our work in education. From minor repairs to brand-new buildings and everything in between, our projects are our chance to create welcoming, inspiring places to learn.

In 2022, we completed a £2.7m project at Crestwood Community School in Eastleigh, creating a new atrium that replaced an ageing roof connecting two school buildings. The project went beyond essential repairs, transforming the school experience for students and enhancing the overall learning

School Creating a corridor for collaboration

The roof that previously linked Crestwood Community School’s two campus buildings had become old and prone to leaks. Once used merely as a connecting corridor, the space has now been completely transformed through the creation of a new enclosed atrium.

The light-filled atrium now serves as a vibrant hub for students, featuring communal workspaces, seating, and breakout areas that line the new ‘mall’ connecting the two buildings. This transformation has elevated the space from a simple passageway into a central social and learning area, reflecting and supporting the school’s culture as an inspiring and inclusive community.

Bringing value for money to education

We recognise the importance of delivering value for money, particularly for schools where budgets must be carefully managed. At Crestwood Community School, we achieved this by incorporating the existing steel trusses into the new design — stripping them back and repainting them to become a striking feature within the new atrium. This cost-effective and creative decision was made collaboratively with our client, Hampshire County Council.

The project also included the installation of a radiant panel heating system along the atrium’s exterior to enhance heating and ventilation performance. We completely replaced the existing 850m² of concrete paving slab flooring with high-quality Marshalls granite-effect paving and installed 100 new solar panels. The energy generated now supports the atrium’s ventilation units, contributing to the school’s sustainability goals while reducing long-term operational costs.
