Changing spaces to better suit the students.
We transformed the Sir Michael Uren Building at Imperial College London (ICL) over an 11-week programme, installing a new restaurant and mezzanine level. The building sits at the heart of the ICL campus and is used by thousands of students.
Previously, catering was not available in the building, with students needing to leave the site at lunch and break times. The new restaurant now provides students with the convenience of on-site dining, allowing them to relax on campus between lectures and other educational activities.
Claywatt completed a shell and core strip-out of a redundant space to make way for the restaurant, installing a mezzanine level with a welcoming open-plan design and modern exposed services.
The new restaurant serves hot and cold food to students and staff, with ample seating for everyone to relax between timetabled sessions. In addition to enhancing the university experience, the restaurant also gives ICL the opportunity to generate additional income by renting the venue to external companies.

Operating in a live environment
The £1.45m project was carried out during term time, with lectures and other educational activities continuing according to the regular timetable. Claywatt worked tirelessly to minimise disruption to students, mitigating any potential distractions through a carefully planned programme of activity.
Working directly next to the reception area required our team to consider the safety and convenience of students, staff, and university visitors. Managing fire and security risks was a high priority throughout the project, with thorough assessments conducted at each stage to ensure the highest level of safety for all on campus.
