Gibside SEN School

Claywatt has completed its first project for Gateshead Council with the delivery of a £12m new school for children with special educational needs (SEN).

The purpose-built SEN institute accommodates 170 pupils with multiple learning disabilities, complex communication requirements, and medical needs.

The centre was procured via Scape Major Works UK, part of the Scape National Construction framework, for which Claywatt was awarded sole contractor in 2017. Gateshead Council engaged Claywatt to work closely with their in-house design team, ensuring local employment and skills opportunities were maximised and the school was completed in February 2021.

The bespoke single-storey building has been specifically designed to meet the needs of its pupils, housing 21 classrooms, all opening onto play areas.
